Take a Journey Through Time at the Balboa Fun Zone

Bernie Svalstad, center, president of the Newport Beach Historical Society, is joined by NBHS board members and other officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony during the Newport Beach Historical Society Museum grand opening at the Balboa Fun Zone on June 28, 2024.

Next time you visit the Balboa Fun Zone, stop by the newly opened museum where you can explore the city’s rich history.

Upon entering the Newport Beach Historical Society Museum, located across from the Happy Swing, you’ll be greeted by a large photograph of the Balboa Pavilion and a crowded adjacent beach dated August 5, 1945.

“That’s one month before World War II ended, and there were people still overseas fighting for freedom,” says Jim Lipkowski, a Newport Beach resident since 2007 who attended the opening ceremony. “It’s fascinating to see that people have been enjoying vacations and family time here since the ‘30s and ‘40s. They loved it just as much back then as we do now.”

The museum showcases dozens of historical photos donated by residents, along with plaques and artifacts, such as old tickets from the Balboa Fun Zone.

“Newport Beach has an incredibly rich history that informs our design, appearance and why we attract so many visitors and residents,” Mayor Will O’Neill says. “Learning this history reminds us how special our community is and offers insights into ways we can improve the present.”

The Newport Beach Historical Society was formed in 1967 by local historian Bill Grundy. The nonprofit organization opened a museum at the Balboa Branch of the Newport Beach Public Library in 2016. The museum had to move because the peninsula library is scheduled for demolition and reconstruction.

“We are excited about the new location,” says Bernie Svalstad, president of the historical society. “There’s a lot more traffic, and we get to engage with more people. Our goal is to preserve all the history of Newport Beach.”

The historical society hosts lectures and social events. The Balboa Fun Zone location is temporary, and the historical society is still looking for a permanent space, Svalstad said.
