Market dining: In-store burgers and more

Grocery stores used to be places you went to get … groceries. Upscale markets such as Gelson’s and Whole Foods now offer in-house, sit-down venues with engaging menus, thoughtfully curated beer and wine lists and often amazing value.

Shareables at Gelson’s Wine Bar at Harbor View Shopping Center include lobster sliders and tri-tip steak frites, each $13. But the star of the show is the Gelson’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger: a generous half pound of Angus beef with grilled onions, peppered bacon, Swiss cheese and Elysian Space Dust IPA barbecue sauce on a brioche bun plus sidewinder fries for $17. Fine wines by the glass start at $8 and are $2 off on Wednesdays. There’s no corkage for bottles bought onsite.

“Never cry over spilled milk, it could have been whiskey!” That’s one of several sayings on the walls at brick-and-wood Back Bay Tavern at Fashion Island’s Whole Foods Market. The Market Pub Burger has two grass-fed beef patties, American cheese and fixings on toasted brioche plus salad or fries for $14; that burger and a beer is $14 on Thursdays. Starters include crispy cauliflower bites for $10. Enjoy attractively priced wines by the glass ($6 and up) and intriguing beers ($7) at the convivial bar.
